This mythical automobile shown here is known as the 1961 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Veloce Type 750E ‘a goccia’ (drop) by Michelotti-Conrero, chassis 04718, a true one-off creation, with no other examples known to exist aside from this one! What started out as a standard Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Veloce Type 750E at the Portello Alfa Romeo plants in 1957 later became what you see here today after work for this project was completed by some of the greatest in the industry in the year 1961. Sometime in between 1957 and 1961, this example was re-bodied by iconic Italian coach-building company, Zagato, meaning the ‘Goccia’ is somewhat of a GT-category racing variation of a Zagato-bodied Alfa Romeo that was originally a standard Sprint Veloce model. By the year 1961, much different, and far more unique plans were made. This time, one of the most highly acknowledged automobile designers of the 20th century, Giovanni Michelotti would team up with Italian automotive engineer, entrepreneur and racing team manager, Virgilio Conrero in order to bring an absolutely remarkable creation into existence. Conrero was responsible for the mechanical engineering alongside Riccardo Michi, who was hired by Conrero in the year 1950, and served as a workshop manager up until around the year 1970. The bodywork was of course handled by the skillful design guru Michelotti, and the result is a much lower, and curvier design, which is where the ‘drop’ or ‘teardrop’ name ‘Goccia’ comes into play. The Goccia was constructed using an all alluminium body with plexiglass windows. The Goccia was not only just about it’s appearance, but the car was actually also used in racing as well, making it’s first ever racing appearance on June 29th of 1961 at the Gran premio Gran Turismo at Monza with Italian race car driver Francesco de Leonibus behind the wheel. From here, the Goccia would go on to participate in the Coppa Ascari 6-hours (July 5th, 1961) as well as a class win in the 1961 Aosta-Pila Hillclimb.
