1968 Alfa Romeo Carabo

1968 Alfa Romeo Carabo

This car shown here could perhaps be considered one of the, if not the most extraordinary vehicles of all time. This is the 1968 Alfa Romeo Carabo s/n 750.33.109 by Italian car designer Marcello Gandini for the Italian coach building company, Gruppo Bertone. The Carabo was part of a series of 5 total unique concepts that were constructed on un-purchased chassis from the Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale production run. The Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale is a hand-built, model in which Alfa Romeo only produced 18 examples of from 1967-1968. The 33 Stradale chassis were delivered to three prominent Italian design companies, Bertone, ItalDesign and Pininfarina in order to give the 33 Stradale underpinnings their own flare with a new body design. A total of six bespoke concepts were created on five 33 Stradale chassis, which included the Alfa Romeo Carabo (shown here) and Navajo (750.33.117) by Marcello Gandini at Bertone, the Alfa Romeo 33/2 Coupé Speciale (750.33.115) by Leonardo Fioravanti at Pininfarina, the Alfa Romeo P33 Roadster (later converted to the Alfa Romeo P33 Spider Speciale Cuneo both built on 750.33.108) by Paolo Martin at Pininfarina, and finally, the Alfa Romeo Iguana (750.33.116) by Giorgetto Giugiaro at ItalDesign. Of all of the concepts built, the Carabo shown here was the very first of the bunch, and also, considered to be the first car ever with scissor-style doors, long before the days of the Lamborghini Countach that popularized the look. The Carabo can be considered somewhat of a precursor to the Countach (1971 Geneva show), as both models were designed by Gandini, and feature very similar styling. All of the 33 Stradale concepts are owned by the Museo Storico Alfa Romeo in Italy.
