2010 Alfa Romeo Pandion

2010 Alfa Romeo Pandion

We always love a great concept car here at RareCarsOnly, and one that’s up their on our list of favorites is the 2010 Alfa Romeo Pandion, for it’s eccentric styling, and it’s daring personality. The design work for this incredible concept car was handled by Italian industrial design company Bertone, with American automobile designer Michael Robinson as lead designer on the project. The Pandion was revealed during the 2010 Geneva Motor Show as a way to pay tribute towards to Alfa Romeo’s centennial anniversary. The Pandion is entirely based on the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione, meaning, powering this concept is the same 444hp 4.7 L (4,691 cc) Ferrari/Maserati F136 YC V8 engine as seen in the 8C. Perhaps the most eye-catching element on the Pandion is the outlandish doors, which open up via a backwards rotation and tilt a full 90 degrees upwards. The doors themselves make up for the entire side of the Pandion, all the way from front to rear. The name ‘Pandion’ derives from the diurnal, fish-eating bird of prey known as the Osprey, scientifically known as the ‘Pandion haliaetus’. The design work itself was inspired by birds of prey, and thanks to a process known as ‘Random Form Generation’, Bertone was able to pack loads of brilliant ideas and unprecedented characteristics into this one-off. The rear of the Pandion is fragmented into a number of sharp, jagged looking pieces which is quite surreal looking to say the very least. The excitement continues inside of the Pandion, with large glass areas and seats which incorporate integrated illumination. A central barrier running between the passenger and drive is also another unique design element, being that it’s almost entirely made out of white composite material, and features randomized gaps that give off a look similar to a piece of white coral. This is certainly a stark contrast to the additional bright aqua blue and black interior color choices.
