1995 Autech Gavia Zagato Coupé

1995 Autech Gavia Zagato Coupé

This car shown here is the 1995 Autech Gavia Zagato Coupé, car number 12 of just 16 total examples built, a rare and beautiful collaboration between Autech (オーテック), a tuning and conversion division of Nissan Motorsports & Customizing and the iconic Italian design company, Zagato. For there very first project together, Zagato and Autech developed the Autech Zagato Stelvio AZ-1, a luxury sports car based on the Nissan Leopard platform. Originally planned to be developed in 203 units, the model was unveiled in 1989, and only 80-100 total examples were built due to rising costs. This initial project was developed after an agreement between Autech and Zagato was made on May 27th of 1987, which had Autech managing the engine and chassis while Zagato handled the design. The Stelvio AZ-1 was ultimately a luxury sports car with a turbocharged 3.0L V6, pop-up headlights, an electronically adjustable suspension, and an extravagant leather interior The follow up to the Stelvio AZ-1 was the car shown here, known as the Gavia. Unlike the Stelvio AZ-1 with it’s audacious fender mirrors and wild design elements, the Gavia opted for a more subtle approach, and was equipped with conventional rear-view mirrors, a hand-formed aluminum body with Zagato badging all throughout, and despite being built on the platform of the Nissan Leopard F31 chassis, the Gavia is equipped with an enhanced 3.0-liter VG30DETT engine sourced from Z32 300ZX. The engine on paper is said to make approximately 280bhp, but some reports claim that number is closer to 300bhp. The Gavia utilizes the headlights of the S13 Silvia, a four-speed automatic transmission, and distinctive wheel covers designed with integrated NACA ducts to enhance brake cooling while providing convenient access to the valve stems. This particular example was delivered new to Japan, and was originally finished in two-tone cream over bronze.
