1972 Citroën GS Camargue

1972 Citroën GS Camargue

This eye-catching one-off automobile was developed by Italian coachbuilding and design studio, Gruppo Bertone, and it’s known as the 1972 Citroën GS Camargue. The Citroën GS Camargue was built after an idea was presented to automobile designer Nuccio Bertone from French stylist Marc Deschamps. The goal was to get involved with the French brand, Citroën, and to create an unprecedented automobile. After making contact with Citroën, under the supervision of French automotive designer, Robert Opron, the one-of-a-kind 2+2 coupe concept car is was designed by a team consisting of Italian car designer, Marcello Gandini, Belgian-born designer Marc Deschamps, and stylist, engineer and inventor, Eugenio Pagliano. Nuccio Bertone’s Camargue dream car was built based on the front-engine, front-drive Citroën GS family car, and uses a number of the same components from that vehicle, however, the Camargue was ultimately much wider and lower than the standard GS. The Camargue features a braking system that was exclusively owned by Citroën at the time, as well as a unique hydro-pneumatic suspension system. The suspension system implemented into the Camargue was designed to maximize the comfort of the passengers inside, and absorb any kind of bumpiness in the road while driving. The design of the car overall is quite futuristic looking, and when a talented group of designers come together to create something special, the result is usually highly intriguing. The Camargue is said to have been developed in a period of about 5 weeks, from the very first sketch, all the way up to the final prototype seen here. The interior of the Camargue is bright and roomy, which is an excellent environment to be in when paired with the car’s impressive height-adjustable suspension system. The Camargue was named after a touristic region in France, and while it was definitely a unique looking design, the car unfortunately remained as a one-off. Notably, this was the first collaboration between Bertone and Citroën.
