1958 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa

1958 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa

This is the very rare, jaw-dropping 1958 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa, chassis number 0736TR. This unique example was delivered new in 1958 to Belgian motor racing team, Ecurie Francorchamps, and it’s first ever appearance on the track was in 1958 at the Sussex Trophy Goodwood held at the Goodwood Motor Circuit where the car placed 5th overall driven by Italian born Belgian racing driver, Lucien Bianchi. Ferrari developed the 250 Testa Rossa, or TR from 1957 until 1961 after new rules were implemented which enforced all cars to require a maximum engine displacement of 3.0L in order to qualify and compete in major events such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans and World Sports Car Championship races. The design for the 250 TR was a collaborative effort between Carrozzeria Fantuzzi, Carrozzeria Pininfarina, and Carrozzeria Scaglietti, with the efforts being led by Italian racing car and engine designer, Carlo Chiti, and Italian automobile engineer, Giotto Bizzarrini. In general, the 250 TR was quite the successful race car for Ferrari, winning 10 World Sports Car Championship races. After senior engineer Andrea Fraschetti had completed the first ever Ferrari 250 TR prototype, the company went on from there to develop a total of 33 different examples spanning across all types from 1957 until 1962, of which just 19 were ‘customer cars’, which were examples sold to independent racing teams. As for this specific example shown here, this car went on to race in the 1958 24 Hours of Le Mans where it was raced by drivers Jean 'Beurlys' Blaton and Alain de Changy for a 6th overall result. For the 1959 season, the styling of the 250 TR was slightly revised by Pinin Farina & Fantuzzi, which resulted in this particular chassis being re-bodied to ‘TR59’ specification in period. It has since been re-bodied again back to its original configuration, where it is shown today in this beautiful livery, and absolutely remarkable condition.
