1968 Ferrari P6 Berlinetta Speciale

1968 Ferrari P6 Berlinetta Speciale

This fascinating one-of-a-kind Ferrari laid the groundwork for Pininfarina’s mid-engined Ferrari models that debuted in the early 1970s. This is the 1968 Ferrari P6 Berlinetta Speciale by Italian automobile design company, Pininfarina. In 1961, Battista “Pinin” Farina, the founder of the iconic styling company, received approval from the Italian government to officially merge his nickname “Pinin” with his surname, changing the company’s name to Pininfarina as a tribute to his legacy. Joining Pininfarina in 1964 as a young designer, Leonardo Fioravanti, who would later head Fiat’s Centro Stile, played a key role in the development of the P6. The car’s sleek, almost fastback roofline and raked windshield give it a more refined look compared to previous, more ostentatious Ferrari models. Inside, the minimalist design features a wide dashboard with analog gauges and a long gear lever positioned near the driver’s knee. Its sharp front end and distinctive Carello lights foreshadowed the design direction Ferrari would adopt in the 1970s. The car made it’s eventual grand debut at the 1968 edition of the Turin Motor Show, and although it was displayed as a rolling chassis at the time, the P6 was designed to incorporate a a 3.0-liter, 60-degree V12 engine. The P6 is often referred to as the bridge between the Dino 206/246 models and the legendary Ferrari Berlinetta Boxer. Debuting later at the 1971 Turin Motor Show, the 365 GT4 BB (Berlinetta Boxer) incorporated several design elements inspired by the 1968 P6 concept car. Leonardo Fioravanti is the mastermind behind many of the iconic designs crafted by Carozzeria Pininfarina in the 1970s and ’80s, and simply put, his contributions deserve recognition. Today, the P6 concept car is part of the collection at the Museo Nazionale dell’Automobile in Turin, Italy, where it stands as a key example of Pininfarina’s design excellence.
