2000 Ferrari Rossa

2000 Ferrari Rossa

This is the very unique 2000 Ferrari Rossa by Pininfarina (104982), a special roofless ‘barchetta’ creation that was developed in order to celebrate Pininfarina’s 70th anniversary as a company. The Rossa was penned by Japanese industrial designer Ken Okuyama of Pininfarina who is also responsible for the design of the famous Ferrari Enzo as well as the one-off Ferrari P4/5 during his time at Pininfarina before establishing the Ken Okuyama Design company. The Rossa was constructed using the chassis of a Ferrari 550 Maranello, S/N 104982, a car that was previously driven by Giancarlo Fisichella in 1996 during the Ferrari Racing Days Nürburgring Présentation. The design team at Pininfarina, headed by Okuyama for this project got together and modified both the interior and exterior to create a futuristic-looking one-off retro speedster. The Rossa was also intended to appear as somewhat of a modern interpretation of the 1958 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa, and as a nod to that legendary model, this modern portrayal used a classic aluminum shifter gate, and a functional race-inspired interior with 4-point harnesses. Also found on the interior is perhaps the most interesting design element of the Rossa overall, which is the large center console that separates the driver and passenger, giving each person their own separate area. The Rossa is a fully-functional automobile, borrowing the same 5.5L V12 engine found in the Ferrari 550, which on this fascinating model is partially exposed. While the Rossa lacks traditional rear view mirrors, this element is replaced by a rear view camera behind the driver and passenger. Interestingly, the Rossa features no actual key, and instead offers a start up sequence using a series of buttons and switches. Another creation of Okuyama, known as the Kode 57 (recently acquired by @wearecurated) is often times considered as the successor to the Rossa model (unofficially), and it becomes evident when comparing the two designs side by side.
