2004 Ford GT Prototype CP-1

2004 Ford GT Prototype CP-1

This is the 2004 Ford GT Prototype CP-1, possibly one of the most important cars in Ford history. The CP-1, or Confirmation Prototype 1 was the first EVER fully-functional Ford GT prototype built in 2003 as part of the development of the Ford GT which was set to be the tribute car to the Le Mans-winning GT40 racecar. This car wears VIN no. 004 because the first 3 prototypes were non-runners built for exhibition only, and all currently reside in the Ford museum. Car number 004 (shown here) was also the first of the prototypes to be dressed with a full interior and drivetrain. The car itself is autographed by 13 members of the original GT design team including Carroll Shelby, Bill Ford and other automotive icons. CP1 has mustang airbags, a Ford Windstar steering column, sharpie marker instructions on the center console saying “push red button to start”, and an experimental exhaust system, all of which of course did not make it into production.

How many made? CP1 is the only running prototype so technically it’s a one of one in it’s own way. This car can either be considered a 1 of 1, 1 of 4, or a 1 of 4038 if you consider all of the production GT’s. Either way, rare!

Engine: A roughly similar 5.4L supercharged Ford Modular V8 that was used in the production cars. The engine functions, but with a catch...

Debut: The first ever GT was shown at the 2002 North American International Auto Show.

Top Speed: Here’s the catch. The CP1 is not road-legal, so to ensure no one try’s anything funny, Ford engineers installed an limiter to only allow this car to achieve a top speed of 5mph, yep . (Show and display only)

0-60mph: this car in its current form only is able to go 5mph.
