1966 Lamborghini 400 GT Flying Star Il

1966 Lamborghini 400 GT Flying Star Il

This unique one-off vehicle shown here was a collaborative effort between both the Italian automobile coachbuilder, Touring Superleggera and the famous Italian automotive manufacturer, Lamborghini. This is the story behind the 1966 Lamborghini 400 GT Flying Star Il, a unique project that was built on the chassis of a Lamborghini 400 GT (number 0904). During the early 1960’s, Italian industrialist and creator of the Lamborghini brand, Ferruccio Lamborghini was seeking to create a production vehicle that could compete against rival manufacturer Ferrari. This resulted in the 350 GTV, which would later become the forerunner of the companies first ever production vehicle known as the 350 GT in 1964. Lamborghini produced around 120 units of the 350 GT before moving on to a new project entirely, the 400 GT. Lamborghini increased both the power and the interior room of the 350 GT with the 400 GT ‘Interim’ of 1966. All in all, 23 units of this ‘Interim’ model were built before Lamborghini had realized they wanted to re-design the body to accommodate for a more spacious four-seat interior, and thus, the 400 GT 2+2 was born, and only around 250+ units were built for the world. This concept shown here is certainly rarer than all of the models listed above, being that only one example was ever produced. The ‘Flying Star Il’ was designed by a team led by Italian automobile designer Carlo Anderloni, and is a reference to the Giuseppe Seregini-designed Touring ‘Flying Star’ roadsters. The chassis used for the Flying Star II was shortened by 3.9 inches in comparison to the standard 400 GT, and the car was given a new body with angular lines and a roofline that is reminiscent of a station wagon. The Flying Star Il would become Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera’s last design before the companies revival later in 2006. The fully-functional Flying Star II made its global debut at the 1966 Turin Motor Show, and today, it’s believed to be kept at a Volkswagen dealership in Radom, Poland.
