1996 Lamborghini Raptor by Zagato

1996 Lamborghini Raptor by Zagato

This is the incredible 1996 Lamborghini Raptor by Zagato (chassis P06), a one-off that was developed in collaboration with Lamborghini SpA, independent coachbuilding company Zagato, and Alain Wicki, a Swiss skeleton bobsled racer who competed during the 1980’s. The Raptor was designed by a team of Zagato engineers under the guidance of chief designer at Zagato, Norihiko Harada. The prototype was constructed using a tubular space-frame chassis fitted with a one-of-a-kind carbon-fiber bodyshell that was hinged at both the front and the rear, negating the need for traditional doors, and instead opting for a canopy-style entry into the cabin. One of the most distinguishable design features might be the famous Zagato ‘double-bubble’ roof, which was engineered to be removable on the Raptor. Before the Zagato/Harada designed Lamborghini P147 Canto, the Zagato Raptor initially planned to bridge the gap between Lamborghini’s successful Diablo model, and the possible future flagship V12. Mechanically, the Raptor was almost all the same as the Diablo VT model, including the six-speed manual, all-wheel-drive transmission. The car is finished in its original shade of ‘sea green’ with a dark grey Alcantara-swathed interior. The Raptor was truly a remarkable piece of engineering, with Alain Wicki presenting the idea to Zagato in summer of 1995 in association with Lamborghini, the car was finished by March of 1996. The Raptor was one of the world’s first ever cars to be designed with a digital manufacturing process, which allowed the engineers for the project to carry out very impressive achievements for this car rather quickly. Other unique options on the Raptor included specially-designed five-spoke alloy wheels, bespoke British Alcon racing brakes, a Momo steering wheel with a Zagato logo, and much more! The one-of-a-kind prototype was eventually sold by RM Sotheby’s (@rmsothebys) in November 2019 for $1,086,250.
