1958 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster

1958 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster

This 1958 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster is possibly the rarest one yet. The story behind the 300SL began sometime in the early 50’s, Mercedes-Benz’s very own United States importer, Max Hoffman, suggested the idea of producing a toned-down sports car that would be based on the W194 racer at a directors meeting in Stuttgart in 1953. General Director Fritz Konecke agreed to the idea at the time, and only a year later, at the 1954 Frankfurt Motor Show, the 300SL was first introduced to the public. Subsequently, from 1954 until 1963, Mercedes-Benz produced just 3,258 total units of the 300SL across both a coupe and roadster unique. For the 1958 model year alone, this car is 1 of just 324 total examples produced, and reportedly, 1 of just 6 total original ‘Light Blue’ 300SL’s built for the world. While the Roadster variant doesn’t share the iconic gullwing-style doors, it does offer the same 2,996 cc (182.8 cu in) M198 Straight six engine, that produces an enhanced 240hp for the roadster. The 300SL Roadster was first introduced at the 1957 Geneva Motor Show and was more refined than the coupe, offering more power, better handling and more space for luggage. Both the 300SL coupe & roadster are by far one of the most iconic Mercedes-Benz models of all time, and also one of my favorites!
