1985 Nissan MID4

1985 Nissan MID4

This is the 1985 Nissan MID4, this being the second prototype built of it’s kind, with the major difference here being that this red MID4 was constructed in right-hand drive configuration, as opposed to the very first MID4’s left-hand drive setup, and pearl white paint. In the spring of 1984, development of the MID4 was assigned to a design team led by Shinichiro Sakurai. The first MID4 prototype was showcased at the 1985 International Motor Show Germany, while this red example was shown at the 1985 Tokyo Motor Show. It featured a mid-engine configuration combined with a full-time all-wheel-drive system, quite an uncommon pairing at the time, which allowed for improved balance and grip without sacrificing drivability. One of its most notable innovations was the introduction of a drive-by-wire throttle, a system that replaced mechanical linkages with electronic controls. The car also came equipped with a sophisticated V6 engine utilizing dual overhead cams and four valves per cylinder, reflecting a push toward more performance-oriented engineering in Japan. The body was constructed from fiberglass-reinforced plastic to keep weight down, while the interior, trimmed in leather, emphasized craftsmanship over mass production. In October 1987, Nissan unveiled the MID4-II at the Tokyo Motor Show, showcasing a refined design that blended elements of the Porsche 959 and Ferrari Testarossa while retaining Nissan’s unique styling. Three additional prototypes were built in ivory white, metallic red, and titanium gray, with the latter used for track testing, and featured a 330hp twin-turbocharged engine similar to the upcoming Z32 300ZX, though it lacked the complex 4WD system, which was later developed in collaboration with Steyr-Daimler-Puch. The MID4-II project was led by Takoya Noguchi, and the design was developed by Hiroshi Itoh.
