1961 Plymouth Asimmetrica Roadster

1961 Plymouth Asimmetrica Roadster

This is the 1961 Plymouth Asimmetrica Roadster by Carrozzeria Ghia SpA (chassis 1102224086).This one-off concept was essentially a design successor to the Plymouth XNR which debuted one earlier before in 1960, which was built by both Chrysler and Plymouth, constructed by Ghia, and designed by the great automobile designer Virgil Exner. Current day, the Asimmetrica Roadster is owned by @caretakerscollection thanks to @mortonstreetpartners for making the acquisition a reality! The 1940’s began the years of streamline bodies, fins, and other design elements and ideas which drew inspiration from jets, rockets, and other various aircraft. In contrast to this movement, Plymouth valued it’s engineering capabilities over flashy designs, which ultimately resulted in slow sales during the mid-to late 1940’s. By 1947, Exner had stepped into the scene to help Chrysler with their designs, which became much more streamlined and futuristic as opposed to the previously square-shaped automobiles from the previous generations. In order to compete with the popular Chevrolet Corvette, Chrysler requested Exner to design a unique car on the chassis of a Plymouth Valiant. Originally named the Plymouth Falcon, and then the Asymmetrica, the unique concept car was later renamed to become the ‘XNR’. Following the XNR came this surreal car shown here, the Asimmetrica Roadster. The Asimmetrica is believed to be either styled by Exner late in his career at Chrysler and then put together by Ghia, or, completed solely as an Exner/Ghia product with no involvement from Chrysler at all. Unlike the XNR, this concept shown here features a full windshield, a more conventional tail and rear deck, and other changes both inside and out. What the Asimmetrica does share in common with the XNR is the fact that they were both built using a Plymouth Valiant chassis, drivetrain and engine. A production of approximately 25 units was initially planned, but only 1 was ever built!
