DownloadThis is the incredibly rare, 1990 Porsche Schuppan 962 CR prototype, chassis number (AS 962CR P1) 1 of less than 10 cars built for the entire planet, with only a fraction left surviving today. A very small number of Schuppan 962 cars were built which included one 962 LM prototype, two 962 LM production models, two 962 CR prototypes, two 962 CR production cars and one 962 CR/LM, which combined a standard LM configuration with partial CR rear bodywork. Some of these cars no longer exist today. Separately, one unused Schuppan 962CR carbon fiber chassis was never utilized by them and was eventually acquired by a 962CR owner who later sold it to Jochen Dauer. This car, Build 02, known as the CR01 prototype with chassis AS 962CR P1, was built by Vern Schuppan Ltd in early 1991 using the ex-Omron TS-01 ACT chassis due to delays with the wider Reynard frames. Funded by Art Sport Corp of Japan, this originally Dark Grey car appeared in Schuppan’s brochure and the 1991 Le Mans yearbook. It now resides in the UK with a correct IMSA-spec engine. The Schuppan-Porsche 962 LM and 962 CR differed in key areas. The 962 LM featured Porsche-designed Le Mans bodywork, an ACT carbon fiber chassis, and a factory 2.65L Porsche engine with top-mounted cooling ducts. The 962 CR had custom bodywork by Mike Simcoe, a 2-inch wider Reynard carbon chassis, and a 3.4L IMSA-spec Andial engine making 600 horsepower, with side-mounted cooling intakes. The Schuppan 962 models were only produced from the early to mid 1990s, and were ultimately developed as a tribute to Australian racecar driver, Vern Schuppan, and his success behind the wheel of the Group-C Porsche 956.
