2005 Rinspeed Senso

2005 Rinspeed Senso

This whimsical car shown here is the 2005 Rinspeed Senso, a car that sets out to place the importance of the driver above the technology within it. The Senso concept car was unveiled at the 2005 Geneva Motor Show in partnership with several innovative companies. Rinspeed, founded in 1977 by Swiss entrepreneur Frank M. Rinderknecht, is a creative automotive design and engineering firm best known for its visionary concept cars that often merge advanced technology with bold, futuristic styling. They teamed up with Bayer MaterialScience (now called Covestro), a division originally established under the German chemical giant Bayer AG, which specializes in high-performance polymers and materials for industries ranging from automotive to electronics. The engineering was carried out by Esoro, a Swiss company founded in 1990 by mechanical engineer Peter Grüninger, which focuses on lightweight construction, advanced composites, and prototype development for automotive and industrial clients. The Rinspeed Senso tracks biometric data, such as pulse via a Polar watch, and adjusts lighting, sound, scent, and seat vibrations. It uses a 3D-formable electroluminescent film from Bayer and Lumitec, enabling glowing panels that shift color and patterns without LEDs or bulbs. The interior integrates LCD displays with calming or stimulating visuals, adaptive music, fragrances like vanilla-mandarin or citrus-grapefruit through the vents, and vibration motors in the seat to counter fatigue. Designed with a central driver’s seat and two rear passenger seats, the car features recyclable composites, carbon exterior parts, a Makrolon® polycarbonate windscreen, and an interior finished with soft-touch coatings, custom paints, and unique fabric combinations.
