The 1996 Toyota MR2 Spider stands as one of the rarest creations in Toyota’s sports car lineage, with only 88 total examples believed to have been produced and 1 of just around 20-30 specified with a factory 5-speed manual transmission. If that’s not limited enough, it’s believed to be 1 of just 4 in the United States, and this one is being offered for sale! Developed not as a simple roof modification but as a ground up convertible by Toyota’s Technocraft division, also known as TRD Japan, the Spider was a showcase of mid 1990s Japanese engineering daring. Its unique profile, complete with spoiler free rear deck and reinforced bodywork, gave it a distinct identity within the SW20 family and secured its reputation as the most elusive variant of the second generation MR2. Finished in Lucerne Silver accented by a subtle blue stripe, this Spider also features the model’s black and blue cloth interior. Factory features remain intact including pop up headlights, 15 inch alloy wheels, fog lamps, a power antenna, spare tire, and working air conditioning. The convertible top is functional though in need of minor repair at the rear attachment points, an understandable quirk for a car of its age. Power comes from the naturally aspirated 2.0 liter 3S GE four cylinder producing around 180 horsepower paired with the S54 5 speed manual transmission. With just 81,465 kilometers or about 50,620 miles shown on the odometer, this right hand drive import from Japan has seen relatively modest use. The Spider retains much of its original character while incorporating tasteful touches such as a black shift knob, shift and e brake boots with blue stitching, upgraded pedals, and the original Toyota stereo system. Also included is a SealSkin outdoor car cover reflecting careful stewardship. Available now on behalf of a private owner, messages are welcome for full details.
