1974 Abarth 2000 SE 027

1974 Abarth 2000 SE 027

This is the extraordinary 1974 Abarth 2000 SE 027 (chassis number SE027-001), the very 1st of a believed 3 total examples built for the world. The SE 027 project was developed near a system of roads in Turin, Italy known as ‘Corso Marche’. The design for this car, which is downright incredible to say the very least, is credited to Milanese engineer, Mario Colucci, who worked in alliance with Italian automobile designer Carlo Abarth himself to create the beautiful result you see pictured here. In the year 1972, an Italian car design firm and coachbuilder known as Pininfarina had just recently announced the Galleria del Vento in Grugliasco, a wind tunnel for aerodynamic and aeroacoustic research located near Turin, Italy. This newly developed land completed by Italian automobile designer Sergio Pininfarina and his team would serve as the testing grounds for the Abarth SE 027, thus resulting in a beautiful partnership between Pininfarina and Italian racing and road car maker, Abarth & C. S.p.A. on this study. The SE 027 features a lightweight fibreglass body and is equipped with an animated 1,986 cc DOHC 16-valve inline four-cylinder engine which is coupled to a Hewland FG400 five-speed manual transmission. The SE 027 first made a public appearance in 1974 at the Geneva Motor Show on the Pininfarina stand, where they showcased their latest aerodynamic and engineering capabilities. Initial testing for the SE 027 took place in Turin, Itlay, and then later on further tests were held at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli in Misano Adriatico, Province of Rimini, Emilia-Romagna, Italy. At least one further example was developed alongside chassis 001, which instead featured an inline six-cylinder engine. Ultimately, the SE 027 project was canceled before this car ever saw any use out on the track in period.
