This very rare, and hard-to-miss, 1965 Alfa Romeo 2600 SZ (Sprint Zagato), chassis number AR856025 shown here is said to be 1 of approximately 105 total examples produced for the entire world. Based on the six-cylinder flagship Alfa Romeo model known as the Alfa Romeo 2600 (Tipo 106), the 2600 SZ serves as one of the most exclusive variations of the 2600, and is shown here with stunning fastback coupe bodywork provided by independent coachbuilding company, Zagato. The world saw the 2600 model for the first time ever during the 1962 Geneva Motor Show, where Alfa Romeo debuted the factory-bodied 2600 Berlina, the 2600 Spider by Italian automobile coachbuilder, Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera, and the 2600 Sprint by Italian industrial design company, Gruppo Bertone. From 1962 until 1968, Alfa Romeo developed approximately 2,092 Berlina examples, 6,999 Sprint examples, 2,255 Spider examples, 54 examples of the limited-edition 2600 De Luxe by OSI (Officine Stampaggi Industriali), and just 105 total examples of the variant shown here, the 2600 SZ. A number of talented designers were involved in the development of the 2600, including Italian automotive designer, Giorgetto Giugiaro (Sprint, Bertone), one of the most prolific designers of sports cars in the 20th century, Giovanni Michelotti (Berlina De Luxe), and for the 2600 SZ, the styling is credited to Italian automobile designer, Ercole Spada. The 2600 SZ in particular was introduced at the 1965 Frankfurt Motor Show, and on top of incredible styling, the Zagato 2600 SZ examples boasted an all aluminium straight 6 engine. Zagato began the development of their rendition of the Alfa Romeo 2600 in the year 1961, and a series of five total prototypes were developed before the official launch in the year 1965. Unique features that can be found on the 2600 SZ include a Kamm tail, recessed headlights, horizontal intakes, and a forward-canted ‘scudetto’ front grille.
