Something attendees at the 2001 Geneva Salon L'Auto may not have expected to see is a one-of-a-kind Aston Martin that was styled by the father son Italian automobile designer duo Giorgetto, and his son Fabrizio Giugiaro of Italdesign Giugiaro. This is the out of the ordinary 2001 Aston Martin Twenty Twenty, Italdesign Giugiaro S.p.A.‘s vision for what an Aston Martin Spyder might look like in the year 2020. The Twenty Twenty was built based upon an early Aston Martin DB7 Vantage chassis, however, it’s clear that the car no longer looks anything like it used to. The design and engineering firm, Italdesign Giugiaro worked hard to create a new style with exposed extruded aluminium structural elements as well as a body made out of both plastic and carbon fiber materials. The lines and accents which are normally the result of light reflecting off surfaces is instead outlined by structural sections in extruded aluminium, making for a captivating design overall. Unlike most concept cars, the Giugiaro team and Aston Martin instead opted to make the Twenty Twenty a fully-functional automobile, boasting a DB7-derived 5935cc 12 cylinder engine with rear wheel drive a 6 speed manual transmission, and 500 hp. Aside from being possibly one of the most unique looking performance luxury roadsters ever produced, especially thanks to its exposed frame elements, the interior of the Twenty Twenty was also an area of research as well. What isn’t finished in naturally finished alloy inside the cockpit is dressed in butterscotch-colored Italian leather. Despite the originality, the design of the Twenty Twenty is one that is often disputed over by automotive enthusiasts. Some, like myself, happen to love the car, and others, think it was a very rare miss from Giugiaro’s styling department, what do you think?
