This is the 1996 Re Amemiya Mazda-Autozam GReddy 6-AZ-1. To begin to understand this machine, first it’s important to note that Mazda, under its Autozam sub-brand, created the AZ-1 (frame code PG6SA), a mid-engine sports car built to meet kei car regulations. The AZ-1 remains a scarce sight, even in Japan, featuring sharp styling with signature gullwing doors, while one of the country’s famed custom houses has further elevated its visual appeal and performance. RE Amemiya Car Co., Ltd., founded by Isami Amemiya, is a renowned automotive tuning firm based in Tomisato, Chiba Prefecture, Japan. Known for its high-performance upgrades, the company specializes in modifying rotary-powered vehicles. In the year 1996, and in preparation for the 1996 Toyko Auto Salon, RE Amemiya crafted up this speciality shown here alongside the sub-brand of Trust Company Ltd., GReddy. Inspired by the 1989 AZ-550 Type-C and performance cars like the McLaren F1 and Yamaha OX99-11, and originally painted red, this road-legal custom build blends a widened, extended chassis and upgraded power with a tubular frame beneath a bespoke cowl. The custom-build retains the AZ-1’s original monocoque for strength and balance, as well as the eye-catching gullwing doors. The car underwent a significant rebuilt in the year 2000, in preparation for the 2001 Tokyo Motor Show, where the original 660cc engine was swapped for a 20B three-rotor Wankel engine with a T78-33D turbo, mounted low for improved balance and handling, and paired with a Ferrari F40 braking system to manage its power. Other updates in 2000 included wider tires, a new wing, as well as a suspension and transmission system adapted from a Porsche 962 racer. The interior retains original features from the Autozam AZ-1, including the air conditioning system and audio elements, while incorporating modern performance upgrades.
