This car shown here is the mysterious, and elegantly designed 1990 Bugatti ID90. The ‘ID’ standing for ItalDesign which was founded by Italian automobile designer Giorgetto Giugiaro. The 1990 Bugatti ID90 is known as the very first Bugatti designed by Giugiaro, and was a key proponent in the development of the well-known supercar, the Bugatti EB110. Ultimately the Bugatti ID90 was Giugiaro’s proposal for a new Bugatti supercar, which unfortunately didn’t get approved at the time. The EB110 was produced by Bugatti Automobili S.p.A, which was setup after Italian entrepreneur Romano Artioli acquired the Bugatti brand in 1987. The ultimate goal was to create an unprecedented supercar, with performance that would match, or outperform anything currently available at the time. A team consisting of the famous Italian car designer, Marcello Gandini, architect and member of the Artioli family, Giampaolo Benedini, mechanical engineer, designer and technical director, Paolo Stanzani, and mechanical engineer, Nicola Materazzi, who later filled the role of Stanzani after he had left the company (among many others), all worked together to make the EB110 project come to life. A team of engineers, many of which were ex-Lamborghini employees, were also involved under a company known as Technostile. The earliest chassis drawings for this new Bugatti supercar were initially sent to four prominent designers, Giorgetto Giugiaro, Marcello Gandini, Paolo Martin, and Nuccio Bertone. In the end, it was Gandini’s ‘DM80’ design that would later be restructured and transformed into what we now know as the EB110. The ID90 featured a unique glass dome design, that leaves room in the rear for air intakes to cool the planned V12 engine.
