1970 Cadillac-Chinetti N.A.R.T. (001)

1970 Cadillac-Chinetti N.A.R.T. (001)

Back in the year 1958, Italian-born racecar driver and former exclusive American importer of Ferrari automobiles to the United States, Luigi Chinetti, founded his very own racing team in order to help promote the Ferrari brand in the United States with successful results on the track. That team was known as the North American Racing Team (N.A.R.T), and this car shown here is the unbelievably rare and unique 1970 Cadillac-Chinetti N.A.R.T. (001), which was named after Chinetti’s team. The Cadillac N.A.R.T. was a collaborative project that was designed and conceived by the son of Luigi Chinetti, Luigi Chinetti Jr., and was developed by the well-known independent coachbuilding company, Zagato. Chinetti Jr. began initially working with General Motors in order to plan out the project, and under their guidance and direction, a full-size clay model was constructed based on Chinetti, and Chinetti Jr’s design work. In a world where most concept cars and prototypes are either left abandoned, or destroyed forever, the Cadillac N.A.R.T. is one of the purest examples of a rare collaboration between three iconic brands, Cadillac, Chinetti, and Zagato. The unique looking car was built based on the chassis of a 1969 Cadillac Eldorado, and features a rear-wheel drive layout as opposed to the Eldorado’s front wheel-drive standard layout. The body is made with aluminum and was crafted together by Zagato, with the result being a sleek looking body with both American and European styling. The N.A.R.T. was essentially a vision of what the Ferrari brand might be able to achieve in the United States. Chinetti Jr. was also looking to provide the clientele of Luigi Chinetti Motors with a high-performance, yet luxurious four-seat limited production automobile. There were no corners cut during development of this car, as the N.A.R.T. comes packed with power windows, air conditioning, and even an AM-FM radio.
