This is the one and only 1997 Dodge Copperhead seen here after many years out of the public eye on display at the @petersenmuseum as a part of their “Totally Awesome” display highlighting some of the best cars and culture of the 80s and 90s. This Orange-colored concept features a number of intriguing snake-inspired design elements such as faux snakeskin upholstery and tires that have a snakeskin-style tread. The ‘Copperhead’ name derives from the species of venomous snake known as the Copperhead or Eastern Copperhead. The ‘Copper Fire Orange’ Copperhead concept was developed in 1997 and was subsequently revealed during the North American International Auto Show where it impressed the crowds with it’s aerodynamic styling and interesting features. According to Chrysler’s Design Director at the time, Neil Walling, the Copperhead’s design was inspired by the proportions of the Austin-Healey 100-4 and the Jaguar XK-120. The Copperhead was fabricated by Metalcrafters Inc., who had been building show cars and prototypes for Chrysler since 1987, and the initial design for the car is said to have been penned by advanced designer, Bob Hubbach, around 1996. The interior of the Copperhead concept was styled by a designer named Michael Burton, and unlike most concept/show cars, the Cooperhead had a complete interior with sharp-edged lines, body-color matching panels, and even a completely functional working roof system, which can be raised or lowered manually. Essentially, the Copperhead was intended to be a slimmed down version of the Dodge Viper. The chassis of the Copperhead is heavily based on the Dodge Neon platform, but was of course extensively modified to accommodate for the Copperheads distinctively styled body. The Copperhead features a front-mounted 2.7L V6 engine producing 220 hp, paired with a 5-speed manual transmission driving the rear wheels, riding on a modified Viper-based chassis with double wishbone suspension and wide, sticky tires for sharp handling.
