This is the 1950 Ferrari 166 MM/212 Export “Uovo” (egg in Italian) by Fontana, one of the most unique Ferraris ever created, once owned by the famous Marzotto brothers (Vittorio, Giannino, Paolo, and Umberto), prominent figures in Italian racing. This car started life in 1950 as a standard Ferrari 166 MM Touring Barchetta (024 MB). The Uovo was commissioned by Giannino Marzotto after the Mille Miglia crash of chassis 024 MB. It had one previous outing at the Targa Florio but faced clutch issues. Marzotto envisioned a lighter, more aerodynamic car, leading to its egg-shaped design by Franco Reggiani and Fontana of Padova. Both lighter and more aerodynamic, the Uovo featured an aluminum body, a 156-liter fuel tank, and advanced mechanical systems. The Uovo debuted at the 1951 Giro di Sicilia, where it led but retired due to mechanical failure. At the 1951 Mille Miglia, the car caught attention for its design and speed, leading Ferrari’s 4.1-liter Works car for much of the race before tire issues forced its retirement. It claimed its first victory at the Giro della Toscana, securing Giannino Marzotto’s place in motorsport history. After its success, the Uovo kept racing, placing 1st overall at the Trento-Bondone hill climb and 4th overall, 1st in class, at the Coppa della Toscana. In 1953, it returned to the factory for the Mille Miglia but didn’t compete, then was shipped to Mexico for the Carrera Panamericana, where it also didn’t compete. It eventually made its way to the U.S., where it raced in California before passing through several owners. Eventually, it was restored and competed in the 1986 Mille Miglia. The Uovo has since been showcased at events like Ferrari’s 50th anniversary and in the Museo Enzo Ferrari. With its history, innovative design, and connection to one of Italy’s greatest racing families, the Uovo is an icon of Ferrari history, representing the creativity and spirit of the Marzotto brothers, and remains highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts alike.
