1980 Ferrari Pinin Prototipo

1980 Ferrari Pinin Prototipo

This not-so-often discussed one-off sedan is known as the 1980 Ferrari Pinin Prototipo by Pininfarina, Ferrari’s first ever four-door vehicle. This car shown here, chassis number 99788 was built using a donor Ferrari 400GT as a base, and serves as an homage to Battista ‘Pinin’ Farina, the founder of the Carrozzeria Pininfarina coachbuilding company. Formerly a member of the Jacques Swaters Collection, the 1980 Ferrari Pinin Prototipo was designed by both two talented automobile designers by the name of Leonardo Fioravanti and Diego Ottina. The car features a number of unique features and design elements such as a body-colored rear light cluster designed by Italian automotive lighting company known as Carello, headlights from Birmingham-based British manufacturer, Lucas Industries plc, and an interior dressed in tobacco-colored leather from Connolly Leather Limited, which was entirely designed by Borletti. The idea for the creation of a four-door Ferrari came from Italian automobile designer, Sergio Pininfarina, who had dreamed of creating a luxury-sedan to compete with the likes of cars such as the Jaguar XJ, and or the Maserati Quattroporte. The car was unveiled during the 1980 Turin Auto Show, and although it was not driveable, it caused a good amount of excitement amongst the crowds, and was continued to be shown around various parts of the world to test market interest. It was decided by Enzo Ferrari in 1981 that the Pinin would not enter production, but the car did eventually go on to enter private hands, and in 2010, for the first time ever, the Pinin Prototipo was operating under it’s own power thanks mainly to former Ferrari engineer, Mauro Forghieri who was working collaboratively with Oral Engineering on this project. The Pinin was last seen publicly for sale in July of 2015 on Hemings.com with an asking price of $795,000.
