1985 Ford Probe V Concept

1985 Ford Probe V Concept

This is the the 1985 Ford Probe V Concept (chassis OGHA 1986 RD PRB5001). A series of 5 aerodynamics concepts (Probe I, Probe II, Probe III, Probe IV, Probe V) were hand-built at the behest of Ford Motor Company between 1979 and 1985 in response to industry wide concerns surrounding changing fuel economy standards. The Probe V was the last concept in a series of aerodynamic design prototypes and were hand-built by Ford’s Ghia S.p.A. Studios in Turin, Italy as fully functioning drivable models with steel bodies. Incredibly, the Probe V has a lower coefficient of drag than an F-16 fighter jet, at just 0.137, which was a 10% reduction to the previous concept. The Probe V, built of steel with a plexi-alloy greenhouse, features doors that operate on parallelogram hinges, pulling out and sliding towards the back of the car to provide an unobstructed access to the interior. The plexi-alloy plexi-alloy material that covers the engine and rear trunk space is electrically operated and moves back to allow access to the engine itself. One of the most unique developments on the Probe V are the flexible membrane front wheel skirts, which were first introduced on the Probe IV and allow for steering to occur without sacrificing the aerodynamic features of the closed off wheels. Some unique features inside the car consist of roll-up rear seats for extra storage space, and even a heads-up display behind the steering wheel. The fact that it’s mid-engined and seats 4 passengers is also another major accomplishment. The Ford Probe V was designed by Carrozzeria Ghia in collaboration with then executive stylist at Ford, Don Kopka. The Probe V’s legacy of styling can be most prominently seen from a production standpoint in how its front end appears, sharing much in common with several of Ford’s most successful production cars of all time; the Ford Sable and Ford Taurus.
