1992 JaguarSport XJR-15 LM

1992 JaguarSport XJR-15 LM

This car shown here is a 1992 JaguarSport XJR-15 LM (001). The XJR-15 is a naturally-aspirated V12 sports car produced by JaguarSport, a subsidiary of Jaguar and Tom Walkinshaw Racing from 1990-1992 with the help of racing driver David Brabham. The XJR-15 model was developed in part as a way to participate in a one-make racing series known as the 1991 Jaguar Intercontinental Challenge, which was held at some very well-known tracks such as Spa, Monaco, and Silverstone. Originally known as the ‘TWR R9-R’, the intriguing model was designed by @peterstevensdesign exteriorly, and the carbon monocoque “tub” was designed by Jim Router and David Fullerton. As far as the car pictured here, this is a very special variation of the XJR-15 that was developed in just 5 total units for two clients in Japan. This variation of the XJR-15 is called the LM or ‘Le Mans’ edition, and this is car number 1 of just 5 developed for the world. The LM cars were built after production was completed and mechanically, the variant is said to share almost 0 similarities between the standard road/race XJR-15, with less than 10% of parts said to be transferable. The 5 XJR-15 cars that were used to develop the LM variant were all converted by XK Engineering under the management of the company’s founder, Neil Smith. The design for the LM cars was worked up under the supervision of Ian Callum, with some initial sketches done by Neil Simpson. This particular example is believed to have been converted from a road-going example. The 5 LM cars were all equipped with LM-spec V12 ‘Group C’ engines, air-conditioning, unique bodywork, and it’s believed that there were up to 60 total differences between the LM cars and the standard road/race cars. One of the most distinctive design elements is the giant roof scoop featured on the LM cars, allowing for the new Group C race engine to breathe.
