1981 Lola Ultimo

1981 Lola Ultimo

This next car is one that easily deserves more attention considering it’s uniqueness and rarity, and today, we’re going to be giving it a lot of attention by displaying it here for you to learn about! This is the 1981 Lola Ultimo by Giovanni Michelotti, and it’s certainly a unique machine. The Ultimo was commissioned for a wealthy Canadian businessman, and was a collaborative effort between both British race car engineering company, Lola Cars, and Italian designer, Giovanni Michelotti. The Ultimo was based on the chassis of the 1960’s Lola T70 race car, however, was powered by a Chevrolet V8 engine. Lola Cars was founded in 1958 by Eric Broadley in Huntingdon, England, and was in operation until 2012. Considering Lola Cars is known as one of the oldest and largest manufacturers of racing cars in the world, it’s safe to say that when paired with legendary designer, Giovanni Michelotti, a very special project would come to life. The body of the Ultimo was constructed using steel and aluminum, and the interior of the car boasted a large glass surface that paved way for lots of visibility in the cabin. Sadly, Mr. Giovanni Michelotti passed away during the development of this project in the year 1980, but his son, Edgardo, carried on the Ultimo project and was able to reveal the car one year later in 1981. Michelotti as a company revealed their last ever car in 1990, which was known as the "Villedeuxmille", and after this, the Michelotti name would not be seen in the automotive industry moving forward. What’s true is that this Michelotti-designed creation is just one small example of the outstanding work they did over the course of their history, and this is definitely a car I’d love to see in person one day myself! Being a fan of Lola Cars, and Michelotti designs, this car is simply a match made in heaven! What do you think of the Lola Ultimo?
