This is the 2008 Maserati MC12 Versione Corse (Corsa) chassis number 33558, 1 of just around 77-79 total MC12 examples produced across all variations of the model (MC12, MC12 Corsa, MC12 GT1, MC12 GT1 Mk.2). A total of 14 MC12 Corsa cars were built (1 factory prototype, 12 customer cars and one Edo Competition Conversion). Originally, all MC12 Corsa examples started out painted ‘Victory Blue’, however, this car is the only MC12 Corsa to be painted in ‘Bianco Fuji’ by the factory. The MC12 road car was developed as a homologation requirement to return to racing after 37 years. Moroccan-born Spanish-American designer Frank Stephenson was responsible for the final design of the MC12, however, Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro was the first to present the shape as a concept. Under the direction of Giorgio Ascanelli, Maserati/Ferrari began testing what would later become the MC12 on the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza circuit. The MC12 was built with a carbon fiber and nomex monocoque chassis, a fascinating interior featuring carbon fiber, blue leather and silver Brightex, and a carbon fiber body. The race-oriented MC12 GT1’s race debut was the 500km Imola on September 5th of 2004, where chassis 15442 took 2nd place, however no points were scored due to not meeting homologation requirements. The GT1’s first ever 1st place win took place on September 9th of 2004 at the 500km Oschersleben. In November of 2004, the MC12 was finally approved for homologation. In total, MC12 cars have participated in 105 events and 286 entries where the model secured 35 overall wins and 38 1st place finishes. The Corsa variant of the MC12 shown here is also a track-only version, however, designed for private ownership. Using the 2005 FIA GT Manufacturers Cup winning GT1 as a base, the Corsa model shares many elements with the racing version, including its bodywork and powertrain.
