1997 McLaren F1 GT

1997 McLaren F1 GT

With 106 total McLaren F1’s built across all variations of the model, only 3 McLaren F1 GT’s were created for the entire world. This unbelievably special car shown here, is the recently spotted 1997 McLaren F1 GT (chassis 054), which is the only black example, and was sold new to the well-known Brunei Royal Family. The incredibly rare #54F1GT has been stowed away privately for quite some time before recently being spotted arriving into the London Heathrow Airport in England thanks to incredibly photography from @rikze38, @george_sw, and @taffy_c_s_145, as well as the coverage of the story from talented researchers such as @peloton25 and @brunei_car_collection. The McLaren F1 is easily one of the world’s most iconic, and legendary both road and racing cars ever created. The beautiful design work for the F1 model was crafted by South African-born British designer, Gordon Murray, and one of UK's best-known vehicle designers, Peter Stevens. Just 106 total examples of the F1 were constructed across a number of different variants from 1992 until 1998, with the F1 GT variant being the rarest of them all, with only 3 total units being produced by the factory in 1997. In order to remain competitive in racing, McLaren had to make significant modifications to it’s F1 GTR racing variant, which is most famously known for it’s overall victory at the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans. Because of how extensive the modifications were to the F1 GTR, McLaren was obligated to homologate one road car in order to test the new bodywork developed for the 10 newly developed 1997-spec F1 GTRs. Three were built, and these road cars became known as the F1 GT, also commonly referred to as the ‘Long Tail’, and featured a number of things not commonly seen on an F1 road car, such as a modified interior that featured a racing steering wheel, extended rear 1997-spec GTR bodywork, extra louvers and wheel arches, larger wheels, and more.
