This is the unbelievably rare 1954 Pegaso Z-102 Series II Cabriolet by Saoutchik, chassis 0102-153-0136. While approximately 84 total of these unique cars were produced in period, only 1 Series II Saoutchik Cabriolet was produced for the world, which is this car shown here. If you’ve never heard of Pagaso before, they were a Spanish manufacturer of trucks, buses, tractors, armored vehicles, and sports cars, and their parent company, ENASA (Empresa Nacional de Autocamiones S.A.), was based in the old factory belonging to the Spanish automotive–engineering company, Hispano-Suiza. Pegaso served as a successor company to the pervious Hispano-Fiat, and in the 1950’s, Pegaso built almost 100 Z-102 sports cars similar to the car you have shown here. Notably, the Z-102 was the fastest production car on the road in 1953, and each customer had a choice of selecting a luxury body from Italian automobile coachbuilder, Touring, French coachbuilding company, Saoutchik, Barcelona-based designer and coach builder of automobiles, Pedro Serra, or finally, ENASA (Empresa Nacional de Autocamiones SA), Pegaso’s very own in-house coachbuilder. It was Carrozzeria Touring that handled a wide majority of Z-102 bodies, however, as can be seen here with chassis 0136, this specific model is what is considered to be a Second Series Saoutchik Cabriolet. It’s been reported that just around 18 Saoutchik-bodied Pegaso cars were built total, and of this total number, just around 8 of them were Series II examples such as the car shown here. Remarkably, chassis 0136 was the only car built as a cabriolet of them all. There are three other Saoutchik-bodied Z-102 cabriolets in the world, however, one of them is a prototype, and the other two are Series I cars. This specific car made it’s first ever appearance during the 1954 San Remo Concours d’Elegance that was held in April of that year.
