Happy Holidays! Today we’ll be discussing a the 1988 Pontiac Banshee IV, a one-of-a-kind car that produced as part of a series of fascinating series of concept cars from 1964 to 1988, all named the ‘Banshee’. These four ‘Dream Car’ prototypes were developed to explore interior and exterior design themes that could later be incorporated into production Pontiac sports and performance cars. The first Banshee concept, unveiled in 1964, was a small two-seater with a long, sweeping hood. A second concept followed in 1968, and a third in 1974. Perhaps the most intriguing and unique of all the Banshee concepts emerged in 1988—the car we’ll be discussing today. The 1988 Pontiac Banshee IV was arguably the most wedge-like vehicle Pontiac ever produced. While the Banshee IV was never intended for production, several of its design elements eventually appeared in the 1993 Pontiac Firebird, most notably the dramatic twin-nostril front end. Beneath its futuristic fiberglass body shell lies a full tubular chassis with a total length of 105 inches. The Banshee IV featured a bright red exterior with a matte black triangular hood. It has appeared in multiple movies and television shows, such as the 1989 film ‘Back to the Future Part II’ and the 2001 television series ‘Power Rangers: Time Force’. The Banshee was ahead of its time technologically, featuring a heads-up display that projected a holographic image in front of the driver, providing information such as speed, fuel level, and turn signal status. Another innovative design element was the use of television monitors for rear-view visibility. The Banshee IV concept successfully influenced the design of both the fourth-generation Firebird and the fourth-generation Camaro models. Is this the perfect car to cruise in during the holidays? Let us know in the comments below what car you are wishing for this year!
