1991 Porsche 989

1991 Porsche 989

During the late 1980’s, Porsche began to visualize and create a front-engined, V8-powered four-door sedan, which resulted in this unique looking prototype shown here, the 1991 Porsche 989 prototype. This project was handled by a Porsche engineer by the name of Dr. Ulrich Bez, and based on Bez’s technical designs, Dutch automobile designer, Harm Lagaay was able to create a design that would actually eventually go on to influence the styling of later Porsche models such as the 993-generation of the Porsche 911. After Porsche saw an increased number of sales of their a luxury grand touring model, the 928, a decision was made to develop a new sporty touring concept, this time with a more direct focus on practicality while still keeping the performance and excitement of the popular 928. This new 928 alternative became known as the Porsche 989. The project began in 1988, and ultimately came to a screeching halt by 1991, following the departure of Dr. Ulrich Bez from the Porsche company. By January of 1992, the 989 project was officially canceled all together, despite the concept having extremely desirable qualities such as an attractive design and loads of practicality. The Porsche Panamera model, which was first introduced to the world in 2009, is considered to be the ‘spiritual successor’ to this unique four-door Porsche shown here. For some time, the 989 was thought to have been destroyed, however, the car was actually just being stored away. It appeared in a German classic car magazine known as ‘Motor Klassik’, as well as eventually being exhibited at the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart. In the year 2019, the 989 was set on display at the @petersenmuseum. As far as rarity goes, Porsche built plenty of different models over the years, but one only ever completed 989 will ever exist! What do you think of this one-of-a-kind Porsche?
