This “car” shown here is known as the 2007 Erwin Wurm Porsche 924 UFO, a fascinating design model made up of polyester resin, glass fibre, sheet metal glass, and the roof of Porsche. Thanks to @themethotel, who kindly sent us some photos of this piece while it was on display in their courtyard, today, we’ll be discussing the fascinating history behind this creation. If you haven’t heard of @erwinwurm, you are certainly missing out, as he has generated some of the most fascinating works over the course of his career. One of Mr. Wurm’s philosophies in regards to sculpture is the idea that one must either add or subtract material from an object. Featured in many of the world’s most prestigious collections and museums, Erwin Wurm is known for his sharp humor and critique of cultural trends. His iconic works, such as the distorted Fat Cars and the surreal UFO shown here, challenge societal fixations like the obsession of private transportation. The UFO, derived from a Porsche 924, is a prime example of Wurm’s unconventional approach. Its original structure has been deformed, transforming it into a bizarre and impractical form. While devoid of functional purpose, the vehicle’s design paradoxically suggests movement and speed. This distortion challenges traditional notions of both transportation and design. The UFO captures a vision of innovation, with its streamlined contours and reflective finish creating an impression of weightlessness, as if floating just above the earth. It symbolizes aspirations toward the future, embodying the dreams associated with advancement and modernity. At the same time, it subtly critiques the prevailing ideals and expectations that influence the design of tomorrow’s products. In this tension, the work both questions and aligns with current trends in the evolution of consumer objects. Simply a fascinating display and creation, and one that brings forth many questions and thoughts to any viewer. What do you think? Let us know in the comments!
